*Shuffle* her foot suddenly slipped.
~Shit. At this rate they’ll find me~ she thought to herself.
She was on the verge of being discovered by the creatures. Malachi slowed her breathing deep breath in, slow breath out. If she made one wrong move, one wrong step she would be dead. Her life depended on her being as stealthy as a hunting fox and as quiet as a turtle. For she was up against the most terrifying, the most deadly.... Brownies*!? Wait that can’t be right, where’s my script? Wait so I was describing them wrong? Sorry let’s do that again.
If she made on wrong move, one wrong step the game would be over, and the brownies would scamper off to their hiding place in the walls. She had traveled all the way to Scotland just to see them. She looked over the table from the other side of the room, her black, thin-rimmed glasses just hovering a few centimeters from it, so as not to klink. Being legally blind was a challenge, she couldn’t see anything without her glasses, like not even 3 inches in front of her, but she never let that stop her. She was determined to know everything about the mythical realm. Others thought she was insane, that such creatures did not exist... you’re probably thinking this is going with the whole proving them wrong thing but don’t worry, she didn’t give a rats ass what they thought. In fact she is only doing this out of curiosity and has no intention of showing her journal to anyone. This journal was a record of everything she had ever found it was a short description, a few physical details and a few notes on their actions, it also included an image she drew herself on the other side of the page. The journal looked like a normal twelve by eight inch journal, except the cover. The cover was padded leather so soft even a chinchilla would be jealous, in which Malachi had hand carved in a design of the symbol of mythology that she thought best suited the creatures(see left). Then she took a very soft, and would not make a noise if dropped, pencil out of her pocket. Every time she had decided on the next creature she would record its name down and begin her trek to find one of those creatures. Sometimes she would find one in mere days others it took weeks maybe even months(not including travel time of course), but she stayed on her quest no matter what. Since she had started Twelve years ago she had found twenty-two species and was still looking.
Then she began recording height, first she used the salt shakers she had measured earlier to approximate how tall they were. She set the average height of a brownie to three inches. She recorded how they were dressed, all scraps of cloth and leather that they had found sewn together with scraps of thread. They wore no shoes and only had four toes. They were definitely cuter than she had thought, with their little cute bunny teeth and their cute round nose and all, and was glad that she hadn’t done anything to make them turn into Boggarts*. That would be very unfortunate for her and her house. She continued to watch them do chores for her, and as they did them she recorded. They washed dishes did the laundry, even mopped the floors. As she observed the four of them talking, she got caught in a daydream of what would life would have been like if she were born a different species, Unicorn, Pegasus, Hippogriff, Banshee, Dragon, she started listing off different species she could have been, but doing this just made her tired and she began to drift off. So she carefully laid down. So she could get a short rest. She fell asleep, into a dream about all the different types of donuts(and this is not a typo).
"What is that?" the largest of them pointed to the Journal lying on the table. Brownies aren’t generally curious but when something is interesting to them they have to check it out.
They hopped down from the kitchen table and slowly began climbing the spiraling legs for the glass table. when they reached the top they walked all around the journal until one noticed over the edge.
"Hey come here guys it’s a sleeping human" he said in a high voice which cracked when he said his R’s.
"hmm what is it doing here?? Hey this thing has a drawing of us in it" they were confused on what these things were, for no one had actually lived in this house in a long time, and why she was here. She opened her eyes and sat up only to come face to face with three tiny little brownies.
"Um...hi?" she said trying to figure out what to do next, trying not to freak out the brownies.
"Run!! It’s awake!" The largest brownie screamed. With that they jumped off the table and scampered into a mouse hole. And she just sat there staring, oops, about thirty second later she got up.
"Sorry, I’ll leave you guys a treat as an apology for scaring you." she grabbed some crackers and two jars of honey, Brownies absolutely love honey and porridge, it’s their favorite treat.
“Well I’d better move on I’d like to know more but, that dream showed me someone else I’m curious about...I have a hankering to find a Gorgon*....note to self 'Stop talking to self'". With that she put her journal away and set off for Greece.
Now then you’re probably thinking "That was a fast chapter" well I mainly used this to introduce one of the main characters, the next chapter will somewhat longer.
